Lightship Works leading change in emergency management operations with government partners

KAMLOOPS, B.C., March 30 2017 - A software company from the B.C. Interior is leading emergency management technology by refining how the federal government coordinates disaster response.

Lightship Works, a Kamloops company developing cloud-based data management and communication applications, is continuing to grow thanks to the use of its software to assist emergency management services in Canada along with the opening of a U.S. division.

Lightship has partnered with the Government of Canada as part of the Build in Canada Innovation Program, an initiative allowing Canadian companies to sell their product to government, to improve the way disaster responders create an overall picture of an emergency situation.

“Complex work environments, such as an ongoing emergency scenario, need the most up-to-date information along with the tools to communicate that information immediately to the right people,” said Jaethan Reichel, CEO of Lightship. “Lightship enables this collaboration and immediate communication, ensuring teams make the best decisions in evolving situations.”

Lightship participated in Exercise Coastal Response, led by Emergency Management BC, aiding emergency services in preparing the province’s south coast for a major earthquake and tsunami scenario by providing a reliable way for responders to update a shared map and database in real-time.

“It is exciting to see up-and-coming companies like Lightship embrace the tech-friendly environment in B.C. and create products that benefit us all,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone, the minister responsible for Emergency Management BC. “Emergency preparedness for both the private and public sector is being taken to a whole new level through the mobile asset tracking developed by Lightship. I couldn’t be prouder that this program is being developed in our own backyard.”

Lightship opened its first office in Washington, D.C. last year, where the company has begun partnering with several U.S. firms.

“It’s great to see a Kamloops-based company helping to meet the needs of emergency planning services across North America and demonstrates the growing importance of the tech sector in our city,” said Health Minister Terry Lake.
